Since we are heading towards Christmas, I am going to start posting images describing the events of the birth of Jesus and I will then continue this theme all the way up to Easter.

Here we have King Herod the Great declaring that all the first born children in Isreal must be killed, beause he heard that the King of Isreal was coming. He ordered the children dead so no future King could challenge his power. We see this as a repeat concept of what Pharoah did in Egypt in an attempt to stop the Isrealites from growing, Moses like Jesus was hidden away and remained to accomplish the will of God.

Try to put yourself in this scene and imagine being there...

Today we remember the day that Martin Luther posted his "95 theses"on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg, This was a list of contradictions between what the Bible teaches and what the Roman Catholic Church was doing or teaching (and mostly stills does teach). For example, the Catholic church sold people indulgences, which were pieces of paper that promised forgiveness of specific sins (the Catholic church no longer does this.) This of course is the opposite of the Bible which teaches God alone can forgive sins. This made confession of sin a financial transaction between the church and people instead of a personal relationship with God himself. Martin Luther came across this verse in the Bible... 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God-- 9 not because of works, lest any man should boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9.  The idea that salvation in God was a free gift for everyone to just recieve was a radical idea. This was an attack on what the Catholic Church was teaching, that salvation was through the church alone, through the priests alone, by works alone. The Catholic Church had an idea called "purgatory". which is a place not quite hell nor heaven. This idea is not in the Bible, and it allows for the Catholic Church to keep people from ever being certain of knowing God or of whether they will go to heaven. Purgatory leaves people guessing and hoping they have done enough to earn a place in heaven, which scripture teaches you can not do. 6We are unfit to worship you; each of our good deeds is merely a filthy rag. We dry up like leaves; our sins are storm winds sweeping us away. - Isaiah 64:6

We now celebrate and remember this day that Martin Luther began the reformation, which returned us to the words of Christ and a daily living relationship with God, instead of a religion of good deeds.
